Your kitchen table is a long way from the remote mountainous area of Menyamya in the Morobe province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), or from any place in PNG for that matter. However, you are closer than you think – touching the lives of many women and their newborn infants with the practical love of Jesus as you prepare the birthing kits to be used by the nurses of the Lutheran Health Services of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of PNG.

This partnership of practical support for the women in childbirth in remote and rural regions of PNG was first developed by our former LCA International Mission nurse, Sister Margaret Voigt who served in PNG from 1963 to 1969 and from 1975 to 2014.

Over the years literally tens of thousands of birthing kits have been shipped from Australia to PNG, to be distributed to rural health nurses and orderlies to be used in childbirth in these remote areas, and given to mothers for the care of their newborn babies.

We received a letter from Sister Stang, a Lutheran Health Service nurse serving in the Kwaplalim Health Centre of the Menyamya district.

We hope this letter will be a joy and encouragement to you as you continue to prepare these vital bundles of love and care for the women in PNG.

To whom it may concern,
Dear Sir/Madam,
Re: Letter of appreciation,

At the health facility that I work at, the birthing kits we receive are issued to every mama who comes for a supervised delivery at the facility. We also issue a birthing kit to any mama whose birthing experience at home is received at the facility as an emergency due to complications.

These birthing kits are not only an incentive towards encouraging the mamas to come to the health facility for a supervised delivery, but they also help to provide a caring environment from the facility towards the mamas. The birthing kits help us to stress the importance of a clean environment for the new born. For the mama it is a kit much anticipated and appreciated as many come bear handed for the birthing experience.

Thank you all very much for your many years of time and consideration we receive through your gift packages.
Yours respectfully,
Sister J Stang – LHS, Menyamya
